April 13, 1997 — North Shore News Old sch Dear Editor: Isn’t Doug, Collins close to retire- ment yet? His views are old cnough to date him way back. First, | resent Collins writing that the BCTF “leads the parade where the things most people detest arc concerned.” Collins’ list includes “multi- culturalism, immigration, affirmative Action ...” Tam certain “most” people don’t detest..these things, only a smaller “minority” do. (Get it? Doug Collins is a minority! A bit of wit I thought he might appreciate). Whether you like it or not, Doug, this is a multicultural nation. ‘Maybe try learning from your neighbor instead of hating them, Apart from First Nations, everyone in Canada is an immi- grant. It is how our country developed. ~~. Each Collins article upsets me in its own wretched little way, but March 19 “Rights Maniacs Loose” pushed me over the edge. Is Collins aware that the highest teenage suicide rate is among, gay teens? Maybe he does. He also speaks of “homos,” just after explaining that the root of the word means “man.” fs he just saying that San Francisco has a high population of men when he speaks of “the homo capital of the conti- nent?” Or was it a Freudian slip? God forbid if Collins — the Homo — had homosexual tendencies. According to him, that would be perverse and unnatural. Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say it is unnatural to be with someone you don’t love? Or should people “play heterosexual” so that people like Collins can feel more comfortable? Let's try to be open-minded. Let peo- ple say what is natural for themselves. Moreover, Collins scems to be preoc- cupied with “sodomy” and the Dear Editor: LP VREV ETDS This OT A ol is out “sodomite cause.” This view exemplifies why education is desperately needed -— so people are not just fimited to narrow-minded thoughts such as this. Maybe Collins should participate in the sex education course and gain a little knowledge of its real agenda before ignorantly denigrating it. Something tells me Collins would prefer a patriarchal world full of Caucasian, heterosexual, able-bodied, wealthy people. What does this remind you of? I fully support an early retirement (although late enough) of Doug Collins, if the alternative of firing him is tuo dif- ficult for the News to do. Let’s face it, he’s from the “old school” and you can’t teach an old stub- born dog new tricks. In regards to the “Push for Gay Ed Panned” article pub- lished in your March 14 edition, | was appalled and ‘anguished, but not surprised, at the ignorance in which Dulcie Baxter viewed her opinion, I think this article is a strong indication of how desper-. ately we need humosexual education in our schools to stop ~the prejudices. “Tam the mother ofa fine young gay man of whem I am very proud.
