THE Union of British Columbia Municipalities
will consider supporting a four-hour break
from work for municipal voting at their
October meeting.

North Vancouver’s Coun. Craig Keating brought Jorward
the motion, which was unanimously supported, at Monday
night's council mecting.

“I think we’re all aware of the low voter turnout at munic-
ipal ¢'-ctions. Municipal elections are almost always held on
a Sat...day. I think it’s important to think about who this will
affect — part-time workers, those farther down the socioeco-
nomic spectrum, it may include many women and many sin-
gle mothers,” Keating s:

The city will also be writing a letter regarding the issue to
the minister of municipal rs regarding the proposal. Any
such changes would have to be legislated by the provincial
government.

For federal elections, voters get three hours off work and
for provincial clections they get “four hours.
