Sayuri Shimoda Contributing Writer “GOOD morning boncurable judges, teachers, and fellow stu- dents.” On Feb. bE the final round of the anni: al Collingwood public speaking compeu- don took place in the school gymaasium before an audience of parents, teachers, judges and nearly 800 students in Grades 5- The finalists from Grades [-l2 per- formed their speeches, and three guest judges chose winners in six categories. Speeches are hard to write and perform. To be a good speaker you need contidznce and courage to stand in front of parents, students, and faculty. At Collingwood school there are so many outstanding speakers, it is truly amazing! The speeches made us cry, laugh, or just immerse our- selves into every word that the speaker was saying. I interviewed this year’s winner of the Grades 6-9 serious section, Sarah Goldberg. She said, “I learned that speeches are a good opportunity to express yourself.” I also interviewed this year’s winner of the Grades 6-9 humorous section, Sarah Mortazavi. She said, “1 learned that the best thing about speeches i is when the audience is hooked on what you are saying. tt has helped me deal with presentations in class and it is true what | they say, speeches get easier with practice.” — with help from Frank Robertson, Spencer Serin, and Natalie Ranspot. wuced hy the Grate 6 students of ging Vaan % SCH Ae! teacher sp sponsors: Jennifer Lively, Lisa Evans photo Janice Lee SARAH Mortazavi of Grade 7 kept the whole school laughing on “The Torture of the Beep Test! } supe ord nae oy aue Bay of EXCLUSIVE SAVINGS icr FABRICLUB MEMBERS ONLY, FRIBAY ONLY. mi FEBRUARY 25, 2000 ‘FABRICLUB: MEMBERS ONLY: § FASHICIUB MEMBERS ONLY SAWE 40% || rariznns Alt FABRIC | S257 UP TO & INCLUDING REG.$19.99m. Your name is who you are, what you are, and according to a recent study, what can change vour life... Many famous people change their names to call more attention to them- seives. Do you think Elton John would be as popular if he had kept the name Reginald Dwight, or would John Wayne be as famous if he had stuck with Marion Morrison? I don’t think so! Names are also key in any sort of team or group. An example is a band.
