16 — Friday, Aprit 2, 1999 — North Shore News Meeting of the hands Sarah Wocdend Contributing Writer ON Monday night the Asahikawa Commerce High School Wind Orchestra joined Sutherland music groups at the North Vancouver school to create a night of music that won’t soon be for- gotten. It was the first time the Sutherland group had played an international concert. Sutherland’s Junior Choir, 65-piece Mass Concert Band, Veal Jazz group and Senior Jazz Band featuring grade 12 student, Troy Marteil, pre- pared the crowd for the Asahikawa performance. The Vocal Jazz group sang the “Shoop, Shoop” song for the Japanese band wearing boas and long white gloves. The crowd waited in antic- ipation as the Asahikawa band Prepared to perform for the second half of rhe show. They opened with an for- mal rendition of Oh Canada, and then students energized the crowd by performing a choreographed dance to One Singular Sensation. The flashy performances continued throughout the show; during one piece, cach section of the band stood up in turn wearing brilliant colour-coded capes :d by assistant conductor Hiroshi Ful Between songs, band members went tc: the micro- Phone and practised their English on the crowd. At onc point a youth announced that music director Hiroyuki Kayo has a body “so big that he looks like a bear.” The crowd responded with hoots of laughter. Kayo is a band advisor for many different bands at junior and high school levels in Japan and he often judges competitions. His bands have performed in the All Japan Brass Band Competition many times and in 1997 and 1998 the Toke Sivic Wind Orchestra won gold medals. This was the third group of Japanese students he has brought to Vancouver to per- form, The first was from North Vancouver's sister city, Chiba. Band members on the xylophone, vibraphone and the marimba surprised the audience when they blind- folded themscives half way through their performance and continued to play as well as ever. The band showed another of their talents by putting down their instruments to sing Climb Every Mountain, which they said reminded them of Whistler. The audience showed their enthusiasm after cach song with standing ovations. John Montgomery of the North Vancouver School Board and coordinator of the trip, says the discipline level of the Japanese bands is remark- able and presents a good example of talent to bands in Vancouver. “When our stu- dents see them play, it raises their commitment level.” One youth said he doesn’t find practising every day difficult because he enjoys it sa much, The Asahikawa band con- ductor, Jun Satoh, was invited to play Bryai: Adams’ original piano which was uaveiled that night. Satoh said that after visit- ing the Capilano Suspension Bridge for the first time on Sunday, he had decided to play Bridge Over Troubled Warer. “Tam not professional, but 1 like to play and am hon oured to play this piano,” he said while Yumi Sudo, coordi- nator of the exchange inter- preted. Grade 12 student, Jaime Ward, presented Satoh with a framed picture of a snow- boarder which she had paint- ed. The 56 member band arrived March 27 and is rour- ing on a dght itinerary unt) they leave April 5. They will take in such attractions as the Capilano Suspension Badge, Whistler, and Science World. Sudo says the Japanese sru- deats are having a wonderful ume with the “warm” people in Vancouver. Students from Carson Graham recently visited Japan and plans are in the works for the Sutherland band to travel to Japan in 2001. The Asahikawa band will be performing at Capilano College Thursday evening. See more , age 21 B Discover $5.99 The feature article is a must read.
