Jason Edward Read, 23, is one of 12 Canadians to have his design selected for a series of coms isstied by the Royal Canadian Mint. The 25-cent coins, to be released monly until the end of the century, reflect images of Canada’s past and the artists’ impressions of the future. Read was one of 50,000 Canadians who responded to the mine's invitation to submit a design for its millennium coin series, His native design of an interwoven cagle, bear and killer whale will be released in October during, a special ceremony at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology. “We had to give our impression of the first thousand years so I chose the animals because they've been here the longest and theyll be here when we're gone,” said Read, who is half native. He taught himself art as a wav to rediscover his First Nations heritage. Read is enrolied in native studies at the Institute of Indigenous Government on Water Street in Gastown. But his goal is to eventually make a living from his art. “My dream is to become an artist full time,” he said. The contest continues until fune 36 for the 12 Year 2000 coins.
