Eric Rosenberg participat- ed in the rescue and was also honored but did not attend Wednesday's fune- tion. Two members of the local RCMP detachment were also recog: nized for their efforts by the inspector. Constables Gerry Desaulniers and Bryan Fedirchuk both played an instrumental part in resuscitating, the woman once she was brought to shore. After handing out all the certifi- cates, Graham thanked them for their bravery. : “F just wanted to reinforce that the St. John awards are not given lightly,” he said in closing. North | Vancouver RCMP spokesman Const. Tom Seaman com- mended the award recipients for their initiative. “A lot of times as police officers, ‘we sce people just standing by and not doing anything, so this is good,” said Seaman. Roger Altenburg said he entered the cold murky water last June with- out hesitation. es “It was just in’ my mind I was fe: going to goin the watertc see whatit J was because none of us knew what it was,” Altenburg said. “It was just something I did. I don’t know why I did it. I guess it was fate.” Rowan Gloag was the last one to enter the water, but was also the onc who brought a rock that was eventu- ally used to break the vehicle’s rear window. Although everything happened very quickly that day, Gloag has an enduring memory he'll probably never forget. “She (the tapped woman) flew up right away. She must have had a lung-full of air,” said Gloag, recalling the chain of events shortly after the car's rear window was broken. “She came up into ray face.” In the days following the rescue, the group learned thar the woman died in hospiial. Ann Altenburg, whose son Roger was the first one in the water dunng the rescue, said the presentation made her feel exceedingly proud, but last spring's event gave reason for concem. “There's always a downside to this sort of thing ... he (Roger) lost 10 pounds in the first week (after the accident),” said Altenburg. “They all suffered.” Last July, the same group received certificates of appreciation from North Vancouver District Mayor Don Bell at the opening of the council session.
