It took four years for the cosmetics company to perfect its Custom Color Foundation, which it launched in Vancouver earlier this month. The product has been available throughout the U.S. since Juty. Recognizing that the majority of women who shun liquid foundation do so because they can’t find a per- fect color match, the product makers developed a foolproof way to match foundation to skin tone. The whole process takes about five minutes and occurs right at the cosmetics counter. As — Elizabeth — Arden’s regional trainer Catherine Westrop explains, it’s ai! mad: possible with the help of 3 com- puter and a hand-held opt'cal skin reader, or “spectrop’o- tometer.” A beauty consulrant takes 3 reading of the customer's skin color. Typically, the reading is done along the jawhue, where skin tone is most even. The computer analyzes ur reading to determine the idiai average of three simulated light ACADEMY FOR > MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE CAPILANO mal 1 SPS conditions: incandescent, fluo- rescent and natural light. Customers can then choose their coverage (sheer, medium or full) and finish (natural or matte). Ninety five per cent of customers are happy with their exact skin reading, — says Westrop. Those who aren’t can enter a specific skin request. Not so rosy? Add a little yellow. Not so pale? Add a touch of black. The computer makes the subtle adjustments. Don’t expect to recreate that Maui tan. It’s not prudent to deviate too far from your natural skin tone, says Westrop. “We're nor talking a com- pletely different color,” she warns. “It has to stay looking like you.” After ail, what would be the point of custom color if it weren’t a perfect match? Forty five billion shade pos- sibilities ensure that the com- puter has your color. Once the data is processed, an individual formula is created and its specifics stored in the computer's memory bank. Into an empty bottle, the computer automatically dis- penses the color —-_ premea- sured dollops of black, white, red and gold — as well as mois- ture and color additives and a base. A mechanic armature shakes the bottle to blend. Cost of the foundation is $55 for a one-ounce jar. Skeptics can opt for the tial size, a quarter-ounce free sam- ple with enough product to last about one month. This skeptic found a perfect match. Q, Gan I dryctean my * Skiwear? Ait Gone are the days when skiwear was big and bulky. Now, skiwear is lightweight and stytish. it keeps the warmth in, the snow out, and the wearer in fashion. Unlike the “waier- proof” coated fabrics used in the past, these new fabrics keep water droplets out, while allowing the perspiration to escape. Since they don’t trap mois- ture, these fabrics keep skiers warm and dry instead of cold and clammy. These new fabrics can conform to almost any style, including those utiliz- ing neon colors, today's most popular sight on the slopes. Of course, the ele- ments take their toll on skiwear, and it ing, depending on the type of fabric and insulation.
