Winter pansy a fine pick From page 18 Be careful not to destroy the live roor structures when you insert other branches or cuttings. The most popular live plant for a basket display is the winter pansy. ‘These plants are seeded in the carly summer and reach carly maturity in the fall, just in time to be set out for some winter color. During the frosty weather they go dormant, but spring back to life when the weather warms. Flowering kale and orna- mental cabbage are also quite hardy during a mild winter. Once the frost hits, the leaves become more colorful. Cut them out of your dis- play if they collapse during very cold weather as they can smell when decaying. Baskets of fall flowering cushion chrysanthemums are very colorful, but need to be under cover and will not last into winter. However, they can be transferred to the garden for next year. The same can be done with a number of the common garden perennials. Gaultheria procumbens, or winter green, looks great with its small dark green leaves and bright red berries. Use it later as a ground cover in the garden. Virtually ali the ivies are winter hardy and can be grown in ‘pe ots from year to year and then added to a winter basket. In fact, you could plant them in their pots and then enjoy them the rest of the year as house plants. Any of the small leafed variegated varieties will remain bushy and reflect more light. Two other ground covers that can be used are Euonymous fortune’ (emerald *n gold), and Vinca minor variegata (periwinkle). Each year a few plants can be recy- cled from the winter basket to the garden as a ground cover, _ _ Evergreen branches pro- vide a good background and a base for holding the cut- tings in a basket. Mugo pine is one of the best as it has stiff branches and short bushy needles. Blue spruce also works well, but the coordina- tion of colors is more diffi- cult. Most firs, hemlocks and cedars branches are too soft or flat to do the job. If you have a pine or spruce that needs some trimming, this might be a good time to do it. Cut the branches at a sharp angle to make it easier ‘to place them in the packed soil. For a source of colorful berries look to the hollies and in particular, those with bright variegated leaves. Others choices include pyracantha (red, orange and yellow), sorbus or mountain ‘ash (red, orange, yellow, pink ae and white), svenploricarpos or He + FJOME & GARDEN snow berry (whites. callr- carpa or beauty berry ¢pur- ple) and pernettya (pink). Winter flowering shrubs can also provide useful mater- jal for a basket. Look tor Viburnum bed- nantense (pink) and Hamamelts or witch hazels (yellow or bron’e). The sced heads from some of the larger ornamental grasses might be a nice accent toa basket. Evergreen fern fronds act as a nice contrast to the BY Isses. Now is the Hime to put your creative talents to work and transform those old dead baskets into colorful new ones. eee Each vear amaryllis bulbs go on sale in the fall for dis- play during the Christmas season.
