Flynt a fleshy flop I innocently walked into the theatre, little knowing I would be trapped in a dark room surrounded by drooling dorks watch- ing legal porn. The People vs. Larry Flyur, rated 14 years, accurately portrayed the fife and times of the real hustler Larry Flynt — however the movie hardly lived up to the movie's high profile adver- lisements and subsequent hype. It’s the story of Larry Flynt, a pimp who becomes a millionaire with the cre- ation and distribution of his sleazy porn magazine Hustler. This movie depicts what desperate people like Allison Mackintosh Larry Flynt (Woody Harrelson) and Althea (Courtney Love), will do for power and wealth. Harrelson plays a con- vincingly seedy slimeball who doesn’t give a damn about anyone or anything. In the past, Harrelson has proven his acting ability, but unfortunately this role did not let him work to his full potential. Although Courtney Love played Althea Flynt well enough, it would be a nice change to see her break free from her stereotypically cast role of the cracked-out porn star, J found the seripr incon sistent, as events would occur without explanation. For example, when Flynt was sentenced to 25 years in prison, after just a few months he was magically tree to run Hustler enter- prises once again. She cant femember if the year was 1982 or ’83. “They were going nowhere fast,” Leonard remembers with a laugh. “They were trying really hard but thev’d just be renning around in circles.” Only four or five players were showing up regularly for practice, and the team, then spon- sored by Pioncer Grain, was not doing weil. Leonard offered the guys a few suggestions. She'd played the game herself since age 10, and continues to play today with the North Shore over-30 women’s team. “Next thing they were kind of asking me questions,” she says. Leonard, now 33, has been coaching the tearn officially for about eight years. “It was hard at first, I had to let them know that I do know the game.” she says. “But now I get a lor of respect internally. If anyone out- side the team wonders about me, my guys tell them ‘She probably knows more than you 0” Leonard is the only female coach in Miller’s North Shore Soccer League. Actually, as far as she knows, she’s the only female coaching men's soccer in the Lower Mainland. Her team, Lupo United FC (now sponsored by the Queen’s Cross Pub), is men’s intermediate. The age of her players ranges from 19 to 40. (And yes, if you"re wondering, the name was inspired by the cleaver-wielding, self-dismem- bering, animated butcher of Sick and Twisted fame.) The team is ranked second in the third divi- sion. It got knocked out of the playoffs in its first game against a division two team. They lost 1-0. “They should have won. I’m nor just saying that because I coach them — If [ was a specta- tor I’d have thought they should have won.” Next year the team should have its chance to prove it. Leonard expects Lupo United to move up to the second division. And of course, shell be there with them. “I just fove the game. Uve always wanted to be involved... I just wish I could be paid for it.” No doubr. Leonard works full-time in pur- chasing for the North Vancouver-based compa- ny Offshore Systems Ltd. Two nights a week “the guys” practice, nwo nights a week she practices with the women’s team (she plays cen- tre-forward), on Saturday she plays and on Sunday she coaches. She doesn’t hesitate when asked about her coaching philosophy. “Have fin. To play a good game, but most of all, to have fun.” YOUTH Views’ reviower Allison Mackintosh reports The People vs. Larry Flynt, starring Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love, fails to live up to its hype.
