2~ Wednesday, March 26, 1997 - North Shore News Extradition of escaped man dropped By Michael Becker News Editor THE extradition process to return a man who escaped lawful custody to West Vancouver has been withdrawn. West Vancouver Police had sought the return of Eric Valois to face a number oF outstand- ing charges. According to West Van Police spokesman Const. Paul Skelton, duc to an Li -vear time fag there is insufficient esi- dence to support a hkelihood of conviction. Eleven vears ago Eric Valois escaped custody while facing charges in West Vancouver Provincial court. He's back behind bars in England. The police had applied to have Valois, 34, extradited and returned to the North Shore to answer charges including two counts of narcotics possession, possession of explosives, pos- session of 2 restncted weapon, possession of stolen property and escape from lawful custedy. Crown counsel has entered 2 stay of proceedings on al! charges except the escape frum iawful custody charge. Valois jumped out of the prisoner's holding area inside a West Vancouver courtroom on Jan. 30, 1996. The speedy barefooted man escaped the grasp of a deputy sheriff and bulted to freedom through 2 nearby emergency exit door. Police searched for Valois but came up empry-handed. The West Vancouver charges stem from the police search of 2 Dundarave home on Jan. 26, 1986. Acting on an informant’s tip, the police recovered a quantity of Cilgel dynamite, Powermex 500 dynamite, CXA_ blasting caps and one .38 calibre gun. According toe Skelton, the gun was found to be stolen during a bank robbery in Montreal on Sept. 28, 1984. The explosives were traced © a theft occurring in Val-d°Or, Quebec, in 1985. Valois was arrested in December in England in connection with drug charges.
