U. Ss. buses powered by fuel cell technology NORTH VANCOUVER-based Ballard Power Systems announced Monday that its U.S. sub- sidiary, Ballard Power Corporation, won an $8.1 million contract to develop a methanol fuel cell bus engine. Ballard has developed a zero-emission fuel cell engine that converts natural gas, methanol, or hydrogen - fuel into electricity without combustion, Ballard said the recently announced contract will involve the development of a 135-horsepower methanol Ballard fuel cell engine to power small buses, or for use as part.of a hybrid system powering heavy duty transit seS, " “The conipany said the contract announced Monday with Georgetown University is part of a program under- lard aware ne contract led taken with a grant from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration. Work on the contract will start immedi- ately and continue to mid- 1998. Said Neil Ollo, Ballard vice president of U.S. opera- tions, “The 135-horsepower methanol fuel cell engine developed under this contract will complement the 275- horsepower hydrogen fuel cell engine which Ballard is presently commercializing.” In September, Ballard announced Chicago would be the first city to use the 275-horsepower bus engines in its transit fleet. If the experiment is successful, Chicago will consider converting its 2,000 bus fleet to Ballard fuel cell engines as buses become due for replacement. On Tuesday, Ballard announced it had agreed to accept an offer to purchase $27 million of common shares from an underwriting group fed by Goepel Shields and Partners. The placement consists of 1.5 mil- lion shares at an $18 price tag. It’s subject to Toronto Stock Exchange approval. The proceeds of the offering will be used to fund fuel cell development.
