14- Friday, July 8, 1994 - North Shore News ' HOM Explore local museums this summer A wealth of historical information is housed in the North Shore’s two museums NOW THAT school is out for the summer, you might be won- dering about what to do. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorothy Foster One interesting trip might be to the North Vancouver Museum and Archives at Presentation House, 333 Chesterfield Ave. in North Vancouver or to the West Vancouver museum, newly opened last weekend in the Gertrude Lawson house at 680 17th St. in West Vancouver. The North Vancouver museum is participating in “kidsummer” on July 24 from noon to 4 p.m. There will be an open house and special activities for children and fatnilies, It wiil include model (toy) i ip boat building and making replicas of the Lions Gate Bridge. along with many other activities. An early model kitchen stove is part of the permanent display at Presentation House. This cast-iron stove with shiny nickel detailing is a work of art itself. The name plate on it shows that it is called the “Canadian Maleable Range,” made expressly for the McClary Manufacturing Company, London, Ontario. It was made to burn either coal or wood and would have heated a good part of a house. Note the shelves above the round burners, where a pot of warming coffee awaits a friendly veighbor, and the warming ovens above for biscuits and plates. This stove was donated to the museum from the home of one of North Vancouver District's early pioneers, Walter Draycott. His was a most interesting life. He was born in England in 1883. He served in the Boer War and cane to North Vancouver in 1911. He was a partner in Draycott and Quirt Taxidermy and Shoe Repair. In World War I he was a typograph- er and military sketcher with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, and was gassed twice. He was a Justice of the Peace, a school trustee, and he took students on nature hikes. He was a feature writer for North Vancouver and Vancouver newspapers and a scien- tific journalist. A lifelong bachelor, Draycott lived for 73 of his 102 years in the same house in Lynn Valley. In 1932 he purchased the stove and used it until 1972. In that same year, he officially opened North Vancouver's first museum and archives. In 1974 he was awarded the first Lynn Valley Good Citizen award. In . photo Mike W: THE DRAWING shows a Canadian Maleable Range (as depicted cn the name plate). 1978 he wrote an autobiographical account of his carly days in Lynn Valley. A statue of his sits on a park bench at the corner of Lynn Valley Road and Mountain Highway. Many thanks to the museum staff at Presentation House for the above information.
