Cigs seized

APPROXIMATELY $27,500 worth of cigarettes were
seized by police on Jan. 27 from a store located on a
Squamish Nation reserve.

An adult woman was arrested in connection with the
550-carton seizure at a store located at d45 West 3rd St.

North Vancouver RCMP and the Vancouver RCMP
customs and excise section were involved in the “illicit
cigarettes” seizure,

Evaded provincial tax on the cigarettes is estimated at
$12,000, according to the police,

A North Vancouver RCMP spokesman said charges
are anticipated and declined to give further details of the
investigation.

But said Cpl. Brent Collins, “Both the Squamish
Nation and Burrard bands have been very rigorous in
their opposition to any illegal cigarette trafficking. They
have, in the past, always cooperated with authorities in
any of those types of investigations.

“There is certainly not any indication or thought here
of band sponsorship or sanctioning, but rather activities
of individuals.”

The cigarettes were seized in relation to Jaws under
the provincial Tobacco Tax Act.

River was unavailable for comment to press time.

Prohibited driving

A 34-YEAR-OLD Vancouver man was recently jailed

seven days in connection with a charge of driving w ‘hile :

prohibited in West Vancouver.

Jeehad Mensury pleaded guilty to a charge stemming
- from an Oct, 1, 1993 incident.
.Mensury was also fined $300 in connection with the
_incident.

. Judge Reginald Grandison sentenced Mensury in
West Vancouver provincial court on Jan. 10. :

A 19-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was recently ;

jailed.a‘total of 60 days in connection with charges of
- assaulting police, bréaching probation and committing

* committing mischief by wilfully damaging a door

“--, MacTavish also received 24 months’ probation.
‘A probation term order states that he is Not to be

"ton to the victim within eight months of sentencing. |

Stolen property
A 43- YEAR. OLD North Vancouver man was recently
jailed 30 days in connection with a theft incident at Great
Outdoors Equipment Ltd. in North Vancouver. |
‘John Edward Tait pleaded not guilty to an initial
charge of break, enter and theft. He instead pleaded
*. guilty to the lesser or included offence of possessing
.,. Stolen property. '
The original charge stemmed from a Nov. 7, 1993 inci-
dent at the store located at 201 Lonsdale'Ave.  * |
Judge ‘Jerome Paradis sentenced Tait in North
Vancouver provincial court on Jan. 19.

Assault charge

“A 22-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was recently
. Jailed 30 days in connection with a charge of assaulting a
» person.

Graeme Percy Hodges pleaded guilty to a charge
stemming from a North Vancouver District incident that
occurred between Nov. 1, 1993 and Noy. 7, 1993,

Hodges also received i8 months" probation in connee-
tion with the charge.

Judge Jerome Paradis sentenced Hodges in North
Vancouver provineéal ‘court on dan. 20,
