Cigs seized APPROXIMATELY $27,500 worth of cigarettes were seized by police on Jan. 27 from a store located on a Squamish Nation reserve. An adult woman was arrested in connection with the 550-carton seizure at a store located at d45 West 3rd St. North Vancouver RCMP and the Vancouver RCMP customs and excise section were involved in the “illicit cigarettes” seizure, Evaded provincial tax on the cigarettes is estimated at $12,000, according to the police, A North Vancouver RCMP spokesman said charges are anticipated and declined to give further details of the investigation. But said Cpl. Brent Collins, “Both the Squamish Nation and Burrard bands have been very rigorous in their opposition to any illegal cigarette trafficking. They have, in the past, always cooperated with authorities in any of those types of investigations. “There is certainly not any indication or thought here of band sponsorship or sanctioning, but rather activities of individuals.” The cigarettes were seized in relation to Jaws under the provincial Tobacco Tax Act. Squamish Nation's Capilano Band manager Lillian River was unavailable for comment to press time.
