WEST VANCOUVER artist Jini Spilsbury has been ap- pointed to The Order of B.C., the highest form of rec- ognition awarded to an individual by the provincial government. Spilsbury, whose lifetime pas- sion has been photographing and painting the forests, seas and mountains of the West Coust, will fly to Vietoria next month lo receive the award at an of- ficial ceremony at Government House. “T always thought | belonged to B.C. anyway,’ the 87-year- old painter and author quipped over the phone from his Horse- shoe Bay studio. ‘‘Of course tm very flattered to have been chosen, because only 12 people receive the Order each year.” Spilsbury was born in England in 1905 and emigrated to By Evelyn Jacab News Reporter Canada with his family, settling in B.C. at Savary Island. With only four years of for- mal schooling, he went on to pi- oncer the use of radio telephones on the West Coast and built a thriving business that would make his name known around the world. In 1942 he began flying a Wace float plane as an adjunct to his radio work and eventually formed Queen Charlotte Airlines, which became part of Pacific Western and later CP Air. Throughout it all, Spilsbury retained a love of painting, and many of his pustel works will soon be published in his fourth book, Spilsbury's Coast of Many Colours. (Spilsbury's Coast, The Ac- cidental Airline and Spilsbury’s Album chronicle the develop- ment of the B.C. coast through the 20th century.)
