Sutherland Sabres trim Prince George 72-70 in senior boys’ basketball THE SUTHERLAND Sabres senior boys’ basket- ball team won a_ roller- coaster game on Saturday, edging a strong Prince George squad 72-70 in the dying seconds of their Pep- si-North Van _ Invitational semi-final] held at Sutherland. By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter Sabre forward Chris Reimer (6°6"’) led all scorers with 35 points, But Reimer’s biggest contribu- tion was his work under his own basket. A flurry of defensive rebounds and quick outlet passes by Reimer paced the Sabres to an impressive second-quarter comeback, =fter struggling in the opening quarter with the tall Prince George team. Prince George brothers Ryan and Jesse Poelzer (both 6°3'") and forward Trevor Romanow (6’7’’) badly hurt the Sabres from the opening tip, reboundiig strong at both ends of the floor, The Sabres employed a full- court press from the beginning of the game, but the big, quick Prince George team capitalized on a number of missed assignments and some sloppy play by the Sabres in the first quarter. At the end of 10 minutes Prince Geovge was leading 18-8. Sutherland Rese’s Strategy of pressuring the balt from end io end oegan to pay off at ile eight-minute mark of the second quarter. A number of Prince George turnovers into the hands of Sabres GAME OF THE WEEK Jake Marchant and Paul Kaiser resulted in the Sabres taking a 36-33 lead into the locker room at halftime. Prince George opened the se- cond half in the same strong fash- ion as they did in the first, re- bounding strongly and breaking the Sabres’ press with quick, con- cise passing. But the Sabres — forwards Reimer and Todd Hinton in par- ticular — also came out strong, boxing out the strong Prince George forwards on the defensive end and running the fast-break Laker style. Sakre forward Dean Lashley put together a nice cffensive re- bound and go-to-the-bucket hoop, increasing the Sabres’ lead to 53-41. Rose pulled his team back to a loose half-court press, a ques- tionable move that gave life to the Prince George team, With the score tied at 70 with less than a minute to play, the Sabres showed the poise they will need in big games this year, work- ing the ball around and setting up their offence. Sabre guard Saro Gosal hit a clutch jumper from 10 feet to put the North Shore team ahead with only seconds remaining. The ensuing throw-in by Prince George was Upped and the buzzer went with players from both teams scrambling for the ball. The other semi-final game saw the Steveston Packers beat the Argyle Pipers 82-70. _ The Packers continued their domination on Saturday night, handing Sutherland a 84-75 foss in the final.
