long ago, when women
didn’t want the world to
know they made their own
clothes. Handmade apparel
was a sign of status;
home-made clothing was
not.

But that picture is changing —
and 2a Vancouver woman has the

Dodge has been throwing the
gates open to ever-increasing
numbers of women at her annuai

“There’s no doubt about it,’’
she says. ‘‘Last year, more than
10,000 women came to our Van-
couver shew alone: Every year,
the numbers go up as sewers come
from ail over B.C. and the United
States to attend the seminars. and
get the latest products. This year
is our fifth anniversary, and we’re
celebrating by expanding into the
American market, with a show in
Detroit in October, and another
planned for California in the
spring.”* .

Why are so many womien stit-
ching? There are several reasons,
Dodge believes. Many are
dissatisfied with the fit and the
quality they get with ready-to-
wear clothing. By making their
own clothes, they enjoy good fit,
fine craftsmanship, and an af-
fordable bottom line. For
countless women, sewing is an
avenue of self-expression and
creativity. And many find sewing
relaxing, the perfect antidote to
the stresses of the ’90s.

“I'm a sewing fanatic, myself,””
she says. ‘1 find that sewing helps
me. escape and forget about the
pressures of the day. For a lot of
people, sewing and. crafts are
therapeutic. That’s why people
come. They know they'll learn
time-saving techniques and really
hone their sewing skills by coming
to the seminars. And the exhib-
