North Van pair win accolades for NFB THE VANCOUVER film Island of Whales has recently won nine awards — five international and four Canadian. These awards include the gold medal for Best Nature Film at the Houston {nternational Film Festi- val, the Silver Apple at the U.S. National Educational Film and Video Festival, and three awards at the International Wildlife film Festival (Montana), including best film by an independent. As well, the film won the Golden Sheaf Award of Ex- cellence and three other awards at the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival, Canada’s in- dependent producer showcase. There were 440 entries at the festival. The other three awards include Best Science and Nature Documentary to the director, Mike Poole of North Vancouver, film Best Sound Editing awarded to the sound editor Ingrid’ Rosen of Deep Cove, and to the composer Bruce Ruddell of Saltspring Island for Best Musical Score. The film, completed in 1990, is a co-production with the Na- tional Film Board of Canada with the participation of Telefilm Canada, and in association with CHCH TV, Hamilton, Ontario; the British Columbia Fiim Fund: Rogers Telefund; Environment Canada: Department of Fisheries and Oceans; B.C. Tourism; and Petro-Canada. The original story concept belongs to Jim Darling of the West Coast Whale Research Foundation. WV YMCA hosting Dramaworks THE WEST Vancouver YMCA is offering summer drama camps to the North Shore with the support of West Vancouver District. Dramaworks offers four two- week sessions during July and August, called Creative Orama and Theatre for Teens. The Dramawarks Sumner Camp is located in the historical setting of Klee Wyck in West Vancouver, Campers will participate in a balance of indoor and outdoor ac- tivities including special art pro- jects using clay, fibre arts and papier mache, as well as day trips to unique off-site locations.
