May 16, 1990 - North Shore News books Info books are a valuable tool for authors, artists, musicians a joke, a book, a maga- zine piece, a song, a play, a movie script, a greet- ing card message, a short story or, for that matter, you’ ve taken a photograph or produced an illustration or other work of art — where and how do you sell it? This week we're going to have a look at eight new editions of titles that deal with the commercial side of creativity: books that provide writers, musicians and artists with comprehensive information on the markets for their products. All are updated annually and published by Writer's Digest Books (distributed in Canada by Prentice-Hall) and are North American in scope and content. With two exceptions (both noted), they are hardcover releases. Your chance of winning a major lottery prize is something on the order of one in 14 million — slightly less than that of finding a secondhand copy of Writer’s Market (1,046 pp.; $29.95). Voted “most likely to disappear’’ by li- brarians in a recent BOOKS NOW survey, this is the hottest reference work (in both senses) for freelance writers. The 61st edition of Writer's Market lists 4,000 locations where you might sell your work including details ranging from the obvious (company names, addresses and types of business) to those less mundane: contacts, fee schedules and the form submissions should take. But that’s not all. Writer’s Market also offers com- prehensive advice on how to write manuscripts, how to draft queries and outlines; bookkeeping, tax in- formation, copyrights and even editors’ advice on methods of ap- proach. An added bonus this year is the inclusion of fax numbers where available. Although Writer’s Market does include information on outlets for | f you've written a poem, STEELE aX, book review plays, greeting cards and the like, its primary function is to service book and magazine writers. Other Writer's Digest books are available which provide greater detail on where to sell different categories of material. t4umor and Cartoon Markets (281 pp.; $21.95 in paperback) has 500 contacts for the gags ‘n’ snickers crowd, including advertis- ing agencies, radio disc jockeys, animation studios and syndicates. Special features, such as tips from the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Mike Peters and the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, Lee Lorenz, are designed with the less experienced funny person in mind. Novel & Short Story Writer’s Market (612 pp.: $25.95) supplies 1,900 listings of commercial peri- odicals, book publishers, small presses and literary magazines. Of particular note are interviews with magazine editors, essays by novelists such as Margaret Atwood and a directory of literary agents. Interested in writing or il- lustrating for the Children’s Writer’s and Wlustrator’s Market? This title (260 pp.; $21.95 in paperback) lists 450 magazine/ book publishers plus contests, tips, agents and workshops. New to this edition are audiovisua! aids, puz- zles, songs, comic books, coloring books and scripts. Poetry and money needn't be mutually exclusive as the Poet’s Market (515 pp.; $27.95) would seem to indicate with 1,700 potential listings for poets to muse on. This year's edition has added sections on submissions, the business side of poetry and inter- views with poets and teachers of poetry programs. Graphic designers, illustrators, cartoonists and others of a similar bent can discover the where and how of selling artwork through Ar- tist’s Market (588 pp.: $26.95). This compendium of 2,500 ‘art- marts’ includes interviews with art directors and artists, how-to in- formation on contracts and packaging; types of samples potential buyers expect and direc- tions on putting together a profes- sional portfolio. if there’s a song in your heart and at least $27.95 in your bank account, the Song Writer’s Market (522 pp.) could help you name that producer — or record com- pany, music publisher, manager, advertising firm or booking agent.
