By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter But how it’s changed ... it's become trendy, respectable, and, egad, fashionable. No longer an item peddled solely by long-haired hippies, tie-dye T- shirts are now hot items, sold in clothing and sporting goods stores at fashionable $30 and upwards prices. But for the die-hard tie-dye fans who still like an authentic twist, local fabric artist Trudy Bufton will show them how it’s done. Bufton runs tie-dye workshops from her home in Lynn Valley. All you need bring is a piece of 100 per cent clothing — any item from socks to caps — and Bufton will supply the rest of the materials. If artistic direction is needed, Bufton will advise on color and technique. Otherwise the product is your creation. “T’ve been helping them choose the colors because if you don't choose the right colors it will turn brown,” Bufton says. Depending on the texture of the fabric the colors can turn out as * fluorescent greens, yellows and § pinks, or as more sedate dark, bold colors. The tie-dyer can use just one color, accentuating the pattern with white streaks, or use the whole gamut of colors available.
