25 - Friday, November 4, 1988 - North Shore News Nissan launches 240SX sports car NISSAN’S NEW 240SX_ heralds the return of the genuine, fun-to- drive sportscar — at an affordable price. Two aerodynamically sleek body-styles are offered — a dashing fastback and an elegant coupe with spacious trunk. Both Offer 2+ 2 seating. Although the new 240SX replaces the 200SX in Nissan’s lineup, there is nothing in common between the two cars. Indeed, the 240SX is totally new, from the ground up. Under its streamlined nose is a Drand-new, smooth-runnicg 2.4 litre, 12-valve, four-cylinder engine, rated at 140 horsepower. Nissan chose this unusual but relatively simple powerplant for- mat because it offers an_ ideal combination of sporting power, responsiveness and efficiency. Moreover, the new KA24E engine is lighter in weight and of- fers virtually as much power as more sophisticated or larger alter- native engines. Its power reaches the rear wheels through either. of two transmis- sions — a stick-shifting five-speed manual, or a new, computer-con- trolled four-speed automatic, beautifully set up to take full ad- vantage of the engine’s output. The 240SX is the only Japa- nese-built rear-wheel-drive sports car in the mid-range price catego- ry. Rear-drive was chosen because it allowed well-balanced front to rear weight distribution, and com- fortably neutral handling. The car’s newly-designed rear suspension helps make 240SX remarkably nimble and easy to Mmanoeuver, even for novice drivers. The new suspersion system uses four arms to control each rear wheel. Their geometry and range of movements was determined with the aid of Nissan’s new Cray supercomputers. The multi-link layout results in what driving experts would describe as tremendously ‘‘forgiv- ing’’ handling characteristics — even over bumps or dips, or during cornering, braking, or accelera- tion. In addition, 240SX exhibits only a minimal tendency towards trail- ing throttle oversteer — a treach- erous trait in some other makes of rear-drive sportscars. Computer-aided design was also used for what engineers call the “finite element analysis’? that helped create the all-new KA24E engine. It has a single overhead camshaft operating three valves per cylinder -— two intake, one ex- haust. Part of its design entailed me- ticulous aerodynamic tuning of the twin induction ports of each com- bustion chamber. This helps pack the intake charge into the cylinders and makes the most of the multi- port electronic fuel-injection Chrysler makes Plymouth cars AN ERROR occurred in the Friday, October 28 edition of the North Shore Auto Dealer. In an article on the Plymouth Reliant Canada-K car, the car’s manufacturer was incorrectly named. Chrysler makes Plymouth cars. The News apoligizes for any confusion this may have caus- system's ability to deliver power, response and economy. The cockpit interior and mono- form seats are sweepingly ultra- modern yet comfortable and con- venient. Its wrap-around theme makes the interior seem spacious, yet brings all controls within easy reach of the driver. The standard dashboard in- cludes a full array of easy-to-read instruments. An_ alternative in- strument panel comes with the coupe’s optional Luxury Package. It includes a Head Up Display. This projects a digital speedometer reading onto a specially treated patch on the left lower windshield. Easily read by day or night, it allows the driver to easily monitor the car’s speed without taking his or her eyes off the road ahead. The 240SX and Nissan’s new Maxima sedan are the first cars in the world to offer this new safety feature. 4 spd, amifm hatchback .
