Break into the freelance feature-article market with Com- munications 190, Magazine Article Writing. Students write three arti- cles, revise them and submit them for publication in Canadian or foreign periodicals. Many student articles are in print before the end of the term. The course has produced three columnists for Vancouver’s major daily papers, and many students have gone on to successful careers in freelancing or staff journalism. The course meets Wednesday even- Options for volunteers IF YOU have thought about vol- unteering but are uncertain as to what you want to do call the North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre and arrange for a personal interview. The following is a sam- ple of volunteer opportunities on file. MONTHLY LUNCH HELPERS wanted to set up tables, serve lunch and assist seniors in cleaning up at a monthly luncheon (usually about 30 seniors). If you are sociable and enjoy the com- pany of seniors, come and join the fun one Thursday per month from Ii a.m. to 1:30 p.m. CARING AND EMPATHIC DRIVERS needed to transport pa- tients to and from their homes for treatment at a local or Vancouver cancer clinic. Supportive attitude a must. SHOPPING, VISITING, BANKING and post office er- rands. Many of the North Shore elderly and shut-in people need weekly assistance with some or all of the above necessities. Place- ments can be made any day of the week and usually require 24 hours per week. Help fill this vital need. LOCAL HOSPITAL AUX- ILIARY requires people for maternity, emergency, flower care etc. If you are interested in work- ing in a hospital setting, attend the orientation meeting on Sept. 22. Communications 280, Marketing Commercial Fiction, can help novelists and short-story writers get their work into salable shape. Emphasis is on genre fiction such as mysteries, thrillers, romances and science fiction. The course covers everything from storyboar- ding a plot to reading the fine print in a contract. Course work may include minor revisions to a com- pleted manuscript, or three short Stories, or « novel outline and a couple of chapters. Each costs $110. Students can register at Capilano College in class on the first night. Crawford Kilian, instructor of the courses, is a well-known B.C. writer. He is the regular education columnist for the Vancouver Pro- vince, and has sold articles to such periodicals as the Globe and Mail and Western Living. He has also published eight science fiction novels since 1978, and is com- pleting his ninth.
