Coast Guard NEWS photo Cindy Beltamy : vessel christened at NV shipyard A NEW Canadian ‘Coast Guard type 700 Navaids ship, the CCGS Eckaloo, ‘was recently christened at Vancouver Shipyards. Margaret St. Germain, wife of the Minister of State for Transport was on hand for the christening. Construction of the ship began at the shipyard in January. The 160-foot CCGS Eckaloo is a shallow draft vessel used to main- tain fixed and floating navigational aids in the Great Slave Lake and Mackenzie River system. The business briefcase Michael Becker vessel is a replacement for the orig- inal CCGS Eckaloo built in North Vancouver 27 years ago. The Eckaloo will travel 3,500 nautical miles through the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Strait, Chukchee and Beaufort seas to Suktoyaktuk, and then an additional 1,100 miles in fresh water south to Hay River. Vancouver Shipyards, incor- porated in 1902, is focated on 40 acres of land on the north shore of the Vancouver harbor. Vancouver Shipyards’ parent company, Seaspan international Ltd., is the country’s largest tug and barge company. Seaspan operates 45 tugs, two train ships and 240 special purpose barges.
