A NEW Canadian ‘Coast Guard type 700 Navaids ship, the
CCGS Eckaloo, ‘was recently christened at Vancouver
Shipyards. Margaret St. Germain, wife of the Minister of
State for Transport was on hand for the christening.

Construction of the ship began
at the shipyard in January.

The 160-foot CCGS Eckaloo is a
shallow draft vessel used to main-
tain fixed and floating navigational
aids in the Great Slave Lake and
Mackenzie River system. The

vessel is a replacement for the orig-
inal CCGS Eckaloo built in North
Vancouver 27 years ago. The
Eckaloo will travel 3,500 nautical
miles through the Gulf of Alaska,
the Bering Strait, Chukchee and
Beaufort seas to Suktoyaktuk, and
then an additional 1,100 miles in
fresh water south to Hay River.
Vancouver Shipyards, incor-
porated in 1902, is focated on 40
acres of land on the north shore of
the Vancouver harbor. Vancouver
Shipyards’ parent company,
Seaspan international Ltd., is the
country’s largest tug and barge
company. Seaspan operates 45
tugs, two train ships and 240
special purpose barges. From
headquarters in Vancouver harbor,
the company serves all ports on the
west coast of North America, from

Mexico to Alaska.

funding for its operating costs
from the car raffle. The funds are
used to recruit and screen volun-
teer Big Brothers who provide
companionship and role models to
boys between the ages of seven and
12.

Whistler has teamed up with B.C.
Cellular to provide the resort des-
tination with portable and mobile
cellular services. The new
transmission site is expected to give
the community a competitive lead
in the global convention business.

Said Whistler Mayor Drew
Meredith: ‘‘Cellular telephone ser-
vices are a very important com-
munications tool for business peo-
ple and, given the growing volume
of development, conferences and
recreational activities here, the
cellular network will give us yet
another advantage.”’

The system is expected to be
operational in time for the ski
season.
