WV Council dallies
over Dali donation

TWO LITHOGRAPHS by
Salvador Dali have been
donated to the District of
West) Vancouver by an
anonymous person,

The donor, interested in plans to
build an arts centre in West Van-
couver, offered the district the two
works, entitled Dali Dreanis and
Pantocrator.

The District of West Vancouver
voted to accept the works of art at
Monday’s council meeting, against
the wishes of Ald. Pat Boname.

“Tm sorry to sound ungrateful,
but | wonder if we could defer ac-
ceptance until we have developed a
policy for the donation of works
of art,’ suggested Boname.

“We are a long way from having
an art gallery,’” she added.

Describing herself as a ‘‘closet
nationalist,’’ Boname revealed her
preference for seeing works by
local artists displayed in the future
art centre.

Ald. Mark Sager agreed that a
policy should be formulated, but
feared that deferring acceptance
might put off the donor.

“Why not accept them (the Dali
lithographs) now, and if in future
we decide they are not suitable, we
can sell them and buy something
more suitable,’’ put in Ald. Dave
Finlay.
