14 ~ Friday, September 12, 1986 - North Shore News TREE AND other landscape plants are not always adversely affected by air pollutants from the fuels, smelter, or smog that seem to be pervasive in our world. Many plants actually filter gaseous pollutants and help cleanse the air. And, according tc a US. Department of Agriculture study being quoted by the American Association of Nurserymen, in cer- tain instances the plants may actu- ally convert the pollutant to a nutrient. Sulfur dioxide, for instance, is quickly oxidized (changed chemi- cally) to sulfite sulfur and then to sulfate sulfur, which can be used as a plant nutrient. As a nutrient, the sulfate can end up in the plant’s roots where an added plus is that this pollutant-turned nutrient may then be taken up by neighboring vegetation. The research in question was conducted by plant physiologist Bruce R. Roberts with USDA's Agricultural Research Service, Delaware, Ohio, who says that some trees and shrubs absorb pollutants through the stomata. Tree Talk By Brian Fisher YOU MAY have noticed browning leaves or die back on your own cherry trees or cherry trees, in your neighborhood; particularly the ornamental varieties. This blight is generally caused by fungus and it should be treated. If it is not dealt with, it may ad- vance and cause further damage. All dead fimbs and branches should be remov-d and all debris raked up and removed. The tree should thea be sprayed with Benomyl. a wettable powder available at your focal garden shop. Benomy! is a systemic fungicide and should be used as per the label instructions. Two or three treat- ments, about two weeks apart should solve the problem. With some of the ornamental cherries, particularly those of the “weeping’’ varieties, and younger trees especially, we have seen cases of bacterial canker, The symptoms are similar but in addition to the leaf and twig die back, gummy deposits appear on the branches and stems. In this case, prune out as many of the dead branches and cankers as possible, below the diseased area. Disinfect your pruning tools after each cut.
