West Van students score above average RECENT PROVINCIAL and scholarship exam results have West Vancouver school board of- ficials glowing with pride. Superintendent of schools for District 45, Edgar Carlin, told a September 16 school board meeting that results from recent provin- cial exams showed the aca- demic quality of the district to be “‘solid throughout, the same as last year.”’ -Results showed West Vancouver students to be above the provincial average in each of the 12 subjects tested. District 45 failure rate was less than half the provincia] average in sub- jects such as English 12, where 2.2 per cent of West Vancouver students tesied, scored failing grades com- pared to a 4.6 per cent pro- vincial failing grade average. The failure rate com- parisons between District 45 and the rest of the province were even more pronounced in subjects such as algebra. Percentage of failure in District 45 in that subject amounted to 2.8 per cent; the provincial average was 10.5 per cent. HIGH SUCCESS Overali, the district scored a 97 per cent success rate in all provincial exams written by the district’s grade 12 students. Of the 42 West Vancouver secondary students who wrote scholarship exams 34.15 per cent were suc- cessful in securing scholar- ships.
