weather, rain and a
whole new set of: driv-
ing problems. °

North Shore auto owners -

can do a great deal to cope
with those changed driving
conditions by paying atten-
tion to simple maintenance
tasks and working with pro-
fessional mechanics to en-
sure their vehicles are ready
for the weather.

While much of the
mechanical work needed for
cars is complex and deman-
ding, there are a dozen sim-
ple steps a motorist can take
to keep his or her vehicle
running smoothly.

The first, and often most
neglected step, is to regularly
check the level of motor oil
and top off if necessary.

Brake fluid, power steer-
ing and automatic transmis-
sion oil levels should also be
checked and topped off.

At this time of year, too,
pay particular attention to
the level of~anti-freeze and
coolant in the radiator and.
consider having the system
flushed and refilled.

While you have the hood
open check all belts and
hoses for cracks and leaks
and replace if necessary.

Check out the ignition
system, cleaning acid
buildup from the battery
terminals if necessary, and
see to the water level of the
battery if it is the refillable
type.

Test the windshield wipers
to ensure they work well and
make sure the windshield
washer reservoir is kept fill-
ed to keep your visibility
good while driving.

Check tires for air pressure
and wear indicators and
have any problems scen to
be a mechanic.

Finally, check to ensure
that all lights on the vehicle,
as well as the horn and other
accessories, are working

rules revert

WITH THE return of bus
service, ICBC reminds
motorists that vehicles used
to drive to and from work or
school, or part-way to or
from work or school, must be
rated for that use.

During the transit strike,
the Insurance Corporation
made a special concession
permitting pleasure-rated
vellicles to be driven to and
from work or school, without
changing the rating classifica-
tion. This privilege ended

with the resumption of bus
service.

Autoplan coverage may be
invalid if a vehicle is being us-
ed for a purpose that requires
a higher premium than that
shown on the Certificate of
Insurance. When that hap-
pens, Own Damage claims
are denied, and Third Party
Liability payments may be
recovered.

Motorists who are not sure
how they should be rated are
advised to ask an Autoplan
agent.
