No further action on WV infill

WEST VANCOUVER council has decided it will

take no further action ‘‘at this time’’

on the long-

Standing issue of in-fill housing in the Ambleside

and Dundarave areas.

The 4-3 votre Monday came
after Mayor Dernck Hum-
phreys issued a statment that

said, ‘‘it seems to me that any
action by council 1s
unnecessary.”’

Opposing the mayor were
Aldermen David Finlay,
Doreen Blackburn and Diana
Hutchinson.

Finlay qutestioned the

mayor’s statement that there
was plenty of room for
duplex development in West
Vancouver and he_ asked
development director Steve
Nicholls how many lots were
available in the municipality
for duplex development.

He was told there were bet-
ween 30 and 40 lots.

mendation called for a public
hearing on the issue — that

residents in the Ambleside
and Dundarave areas should
be allowed to give their views

on in-fill housing, which
would involve some
rezoning.

Said Blackburn: ‘‘We must

give the homeowners of the
area the opportunily to pro-
vide input, to see if they want

increased densities.’’

‘“‘}T want the residents
themselves to speak,’’ said
Finlay as members of the
gallery yelled out, *‘Where do
you live?"’

Hutchinson said council
and previous councils have
asked for reports on in-fill
housing ‘’and it’s only fair
that we let the public have a
proper look atit and make an
honest decision.”’

Aldermen Alex  Broken-
shire, Gordon Rowntree and
Donald Griffiths voted in

support of the motion to take
no action and to receive the
latest staff report on the
issue. ‘

Said Brokenshire: ‘‘] don’t
think that the in-fill report
and its recommendations are
going to be good for West
Vancouver.”’

Edward McKay, president
of the Ambleside-Dundarave
Ratepayers Association, told
council members that many
people were opposed to the
in-fill housing idea.

However, he added: ‘‘We

do feel there should be a
public hearing.’”’

In other business during
the policy and = planning
meeting council deferred ac-
tion on the Crown Foreshore
Lease until June 11 and ap-
proved a nine-year lease with
the West Van school board
for the use of the now closed
Eagle Harbor school by the
municipality for community
purposes.

Because of the Easter holi-
day, the mayor noted that
council will meet May 7.
