Vikings hire Jim Easton By ANDY FRASER The Viking Soccer Association on the North Shore have taken a dramatic step this week with the hiring of former Vancouver Whitecap Coach Jim Easton as co-ordinator of coaching for the 34 team Organization for the upcoming season. Easton, a former Scottish internauonal and long time professional, will be working closely with individual club coaches in prepanng a program for the benefit of the 500 youngsters enrolled in the Viking program Don Gould. president of the Vikings. said Monday that the Association has many good coaches. with most being enthusiastic parents with a_- iimited knowledge of coaching techniques and workng with young players He pointed out that a better coaching program will mean better player development, which was the aim of the club. The president also em- phasized that the aim of the hinng of Easton was not to create championship teams, but to create a greater knowledge and un- derstanding of the game for the players and coaches as well as the parents. In addition to his playing and former coaching ex- penence. Easton ts currently a staff coach with = the Canadian Soccer Associanon and has been a scout with the current Canadian World Cup team. He alo runs a select soccer school during July and is presently in Scotland speaking to a number of teams and upgrading his coaching knowledge. Both Easton and_ the Viking Association feel that the players will develop faster and will have more enjoyment by receiving the highest possible level of coaching. Easton” also emphasized that the object of the program was not to create winners, but a player who better understands the game. The new program will begin September |! and will include coaching programs for those working with the girls teams as well as the boys. Easton will be using Bob Buchan and Vince Alvano as his assistants for the program during the season. Spurways hold tryouts The West Van Spurways soccer team will be holding tryouts for Division 6 players (born 1970). Tryouts will take place at Ambleside. Thursday August 20 and Tuesday August 25.
