Dear Editor: se A critical ‘situation exists at the North Shore's Lion’s --_--Gate Hospital . 198028 ‘confrontation - is. inevitable and ‘nothing. but _ harm to the Hospital services _ can result unless-an-initiative -is taken “by North Shore ' residents. _ Unti}-recently members of the North and West Van- couver Society have con- .Sisted of a few. (ap- "proximately 300) non- “ partisan, © -public spirited citizens whe ‘responsibility - of representing the North Shore’s 140,000 residents to assure that the communities needs were provided for. Prior to the Annual Meeting of September 1979, More than 1,000 new members (some were non- residents of the North Shore as was permissible at the time) joins the Hospital single ‘purpose in -mind. Their object was to force on the Hospital, and thus the -community, their own code .of human behaviour. As a result, at the 1979 Annual Meeting, 5 Society Members duly selected as candidates for election to the Hospital Board by a nominating committee were defeated by 5 candidates took. the nominated from the floor. As all the elected candidates polled virtually identical majorities, the single pur- pose of the new: influx of members was inescapably apparent. There are 17 members of the Hospital’s Board of Directors, 5 are appointed and the other 12 elected. With 4 new members to be elected to ithe Board in of this special interest group will be complete, if the same tactics again succeed. The new majority of Board Members having been, elected by this special in- | terest group will be com- mitted to enforcing that special interest on the Hospital and. thereby on the - whole community. None of us who are deeply concerned about this ‘take over’ would deny the organization involved the right to hold to their ethical code, or the right to try to convince other. people to adopt it. We do, however, strongly oppose their in- tention to impose their code on all other residents by subverting a neglected democratic process. This special interest group organization who are dedicated to preventing all abortions. I presume to speak for those who do not see the issue as pro-abortion or no-abortion, and who are not committed to either extreme. We would pointing « an Abortion Committee -from’” thé hospital's medical staff. No egally performed in the Hospital unjess this committee gives © their approval on an in- dividual base. Merely by not appointing such a committee the Board can assure that no abortions are done.: Whatever your attitude vigorously oppose any group may be toward the isolated who, believing that their ethica] code is the only ‘right one’, are determined to use any means to attain their goal. Controlling the Hospital Society and thus the majority of the Hospital Board, all abortions can easily be stopped. Among the powers of the Board to control hospital policy is the sole prerogative of ap- ‘Onl: ) solution’: : Move Hooker Chemical Dear Editor: Re your. recent news story “Progress with spills” I cannot accept-that my. family should. live-in an area that: mus have. air, raid. Unfortunately, many of the items did not fit, sq my daughtr returned them to the store of purchase, for exchange. Imagine my shock and alert, which does nothing for - my uneasiness living on the North Shore. Why is it the District of North Vancouver has these chemical plants? This is not a company town where we are dependent on Hooker by. any ‘means. The un- desirability of the Hooker plant is obvious to everyone; in time it will only: become more intense and _ will eventually become unac- yes, this was indeed their policy, women being subject to infections etc. exchanges on their underwear was impossible for sanitary reasons, men on the other hand were “different.” This was my daughters’ first experience with blatant sexism and it has left her indignation when she arrived * shaken and unsure of herself home in tears, apparently, the store had. refused to exchange her undergarments — “due to health reasons” while her brothers’ un- dershorts were exchanged cheerfully! How long will this ridiculous myth be nurtured and perpetuated by = the ignorant and uninformed? ceptable to everyone. The costs of relocating this operation will never be less than today. When Jack Davis, M.L.A. on local television last Wednesday evening on “Phone your M.L.A.” verbally confirms to me that, living 15 ft. above sea level and within one mile of Hooker I would be in ‘jeopardy in the event of a spill at Hooker, it brings rise ‘ Personally, I don't believe exchanges should be made on undergarments or - swimwear, but, please, one rule for everyone.
