Beach Club lacks spirit
but has potential

T HE NORTH Shore

Beach Club is in dire
need of an intensive
mernbership drive.

Maybe it’s the weather and
maybe it’s the location, well above
the high-tide mark, that is keeping
evening club attendance to a
sparse few. But whatever it is the
Beach Club brains trust has got to
find a solution before another res-
taurant motif withers on the 13th
and Lonsdale vine.

Previous occupants of the loca-
tion have tried serving everything
from French to Persian food to at-
tract a regular dining clientele, but
none have been successful for
more than a few months.

The Beach Club started off on an
enthusiastic note. Instead of mere-
ly affixing a new awning to the
front of the building, the club’s
ownership hired the legendary
Mad Antist to outfit the restaurant
with a new coat of paint anda
totally new external personality.
Something wild. Something zany.
Something beach-like. Something
mad.

And that he has done.

The restaurant’s exterior is doll-

ing mural featuring blonde bomb-
shells in place of whales.

The theme carries on inside with
one entire wall of the Beach Club
occupied by a single reclining
bikini-clad bathing beauty.

Elsewhere is a splattering of blue
and white colors in tie-dye motif.
The art is reminiscent of those
murals painted on the sides of ex-
travagantly decorated American
vans driven by the Dayton-boot-

table hopping

and-ZZ-Top set.
But unfortunately, the decor was

more exciting than the atmosphere
on a recent Table Hopping visit to
the Beach Club.

Few Beach Boys and even fewer
Beach Bunnies were to be found.

But that’s not to say that the res-
taurant shouldn't be given a try.
Because it is trying, Lord knows it
is trying, to inject a little excite-
ment into the moribund evening
heart of mid-Lonsdale.
