B.C. Automobile Association. The old one usually
gives out unexpectedly and must be replaced as

quickly as possible.

Most car owners consider
price alone and simply. select
an adequate battery from a
limited selection in display at
the nearest service station,
or ask a mechanic to hurry
and install an apprcpriate
one. : .

However motorists who
regularly check the battery’s
capacity and charge won't
have to rush out and grab
just any one. They will know
when the present one is
about to die and have time to
make a wiser selection.

With cold weather just

around the corner, now is the. #

time to have your battery
checked. This will take a
service station or battery
shop only five minutes. Then
armed with the BCAA
**shopping tips’. you'll be
able to make-a better choice
should a new battery be in
order. If a crisis arises one
cold morning and you need

one quickly, you'll at least |

say 232 cu.in. - and match it
to the battery's rated capa-
city. In a cold climate, add 20
per cent to that. So a 232 CID
engine, for example, would
need an extra 46 amps.
You'll need to purchase a
battery with a cold cranking
power of at least 278 amps.
You may not always find a
battery with the exact num-
ber of amps you'll need. In
such cases, purchase a
higher rated battery.

Your

battery’s cold cranking po-
wer is, ask the salesperson.
If he or she doesn’t know or
can’t find cut for you, shop
somewhere else.

IF ALTERNATOR FAILS

Reserve capacity refers to
the battery's ability,- in
minutes, to keep a-~ car
tunning at night if the
alternator fails. The figure is
achieved during laboratory
tests and is calculated for an
80-degree night. If a battery
has a reserve capacity of 100,

that means it will drive a car,
with a 25 amp load for lights,

wipers, ignition and other
accessories, for about 100
