September 3, 1699 - North Shore News — 17 EverQuest rich in reai-time intrigue Shaun Conlin Contributing Writer Spe: EverQuest (989 Studios) Ok, so Pin reviewing, a year-old game again, but in my defence 1 must say that it is the hype behind games likes this that made me scrap my Afacintesh and buy a PC in the first place. Besides, friends and colleagues don’t ask “have you plaved EverQuest vet?” They ask “Are you plaving & ernest? as if finishing or quitting it isn’t even a possibility once you've started. And sure enough, E doubt I will ever be able to refer to EverQuest gameplay in the past tense. This is one of the most addictive games ever — not so much tor the high action or elaborate plot, more for the face that it an online-only game plaved with thousands of other game geeks around the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s a massive 3D adventure, a real-time role- plaving-game set ina fantasy world of Ogres and Elves, Griffins and Giant Spiders, Knights and Magi. Graphically :ocaking, EverQuest is relatively simplistic- bare-bones, as it were. But the experience is just so enthralling, so rich in real-time intrigue that chunky sparseness is easily forgiven- hardly noticed in fact. EverQuest is a com- plete online-society with its own power-structure and bureau- cracy, its own system of commerce and, of course, it’s own method of justice. Group with total strangers and they'll fight to the death for you. Or go it alone hunting resident monsters and loonng corpses for gold and other booty. The experience is cvolution- ary, like any good RPG, and while it takes a while to get the hang of it -— and even Jonger for your character to gain enough experience to do anything useful ~- the game is for- giving for “newbies.” it’s also a free experience for the first month, after which you must pay a small server fee. It’s worth it. Can’e rent this one. Excellent purchase. Top Rentals: i. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (PSX) 2. NEL Blitz 2000 (PSX) 3. Darkstone (PC) 4, Um Jammer Lammy (PSX) 5.
