Folly flowers d Eugene Kaellis Contributing Weiter wn south “BE humble, but you don’t have to be poor,” Pastor Haywood Eudon Hall of America’s Greater Ministries International Church was fond of saying. With his “ministerial bearing,” Hall, spectacled and white- haired, practised at least half of what he preached. Poor he wasn’t. Indicted along with other leaders of the ministry, he has been charged in the US. with money laundering and deceiving as many as 100,000 subseribers who gave the church over halfia billion dollars with the expec- tation of enormous returns. Patrick Henry Talbert, another indicted Greater Ministries preacher, promised that “gifts” given would be multiplied “through the bedy of Christ.” Religion-based scams are nothing new. What might distinguish this one is the total transparency and absolute cynicism its perpetrators exuded. They not only r practised criminal fraud, they combined it in an “affinity scam” with messages of super-patriotism, anti-goven- ment vituperation, anti-black racism, and that centuries-old standby, anti-semitism. The sad commentary is that this did not undermine their success, but only contributed to it. Combining greed and bigorry i is also nothing new. The shameful expropriation of property owned by Japanese- Canadians when they were interned during the Second World War, the sacking and looting of Jewish property during the Holocaust, the unpaid labour of African slaves, justitied on the basis of pscudo- science and pseudo-religion (“t ¢ sons of Ham” bit, for example), provide ample evidence. Jonathan Straw der, a former Greater Ministries worker whose uncle helped incorporate the organization, created pyra- mid scheme Sovereign Ministries International in 1997. Some of the $13 million he collected from about 2,100 “investors” paid for his personal yacht, two Porsches, and a Land Rover. Acthe dme of the indictment, Greater Ministries’ invest- ment plans included gold mines, a debit card service, a news- paper, a Bible college, a linc of anti-cancer treatments, and a supplement to help survive “end-times” plagues. In spite of its much-vaunted but unevenly distributed pros- perity, the U.S. faces sume severe and heart-rending social problems. {cis reacting to the anxieties these generate in irra- . tional ways, with a. compulsively distracted president, a Congress that believes posting the’ Tén Commandments in every schoul will-diminish youth violence, and a State Legislature in Louisiana that purports to inculcate respect by , requiring school students to address teachers as “Sir,” or “Ma’am.” Meanwhile in a Wild West throwback, neighbouring Texas now permits sidearms in public. These are signs of a malignant folly which must never be allowed to dominate Canadian life. 96 Suzuki X90 4x4.
