March 10, 1999 — North Shore News Brad Johnson Contributing Writer FOR the second time in three years, the Handsworth Royals played in the annual high school Juvenile Boys Basketball Provincials at the Grizzlies’ training centre in Richmond last week- end. After an undetcated regular season en route to winning the North Shore Championship osee Carson Graham, the team got through the strong east division by crashing the Windsor Dukes and narrowly defeating the Argyle Pipers. In order for the Royals to play in the Vancouver and District, championship game, they had to win four consecu- ve games. However, they lost their first game at the buzzer 49-47 in overtime against MeMath from Richmond. Staring climination in the face in their second game, the Royals again went to overtime against their North Van rivals 1703 Wasa Stix 980-2491 ————* COMPUTERIZED * ALIGNMENT and wildcard champions Caron Graham Eagles. Despite pre-ganie jitters, the Royals tought hard throughout the game and came our win- ning by three, 56-53. In the semifinal game, they faced MeMiadh for the second time in three days winning con vincingly 56-27, which kept their streak alive, never losing twice to the same team all vear. However, their real competi- tion would come [ater in’ the tournament against the heavily favoured home team, the Hvacks trom New Westminster, Nevertheless, the bovs showed great character in winning two close games, 32- 49 and 56-48 against the home teani. Now the Royals would have to work hard to live up to their pre-tournament seeding -- fourth im the province. They made it halfway to the tinal four, by beating Robron Breakers trom Campbell River by 33 points. A few hours after their win over Robron, they met their level of competition in playing Earl Marriott from Delta.
