Friday, September 11, 1998 — North Shore News ~ 5 St. Paul's church restored $250,000 refit for North Van landmark By Michael Becker News Editor THE oldest wooden structure in the Lower Mainland has received a $250,000 facelift. The = distinctive — twin wooden towers of St. Paul's Indian Catholic Church — built in 1884 — have with- stood more than a century's worth of North Shore rain- fall. But the damp had taken its toll on a structure desig- nated a national historic site in 1981. The North Shore landmark located on the Squamish Nation’s Mission Reserve was in need of restoration. Father Dennis Alexander spearheaded a funding drive on behalf of the Save the St. Paul’s Indian Church Society. The parish has a small congregation of approxi- mately 200 people. Alexander reached out to the broader community in a bid to raise the $200,000 required to restore the two 85-foor (26 m) towers. The wooden framing of the towers was deteriorating. ‘The (original) wooden exte- tior was also in need of replacement. The rest of the church, already previously restored, remained sound. Alexander said Thursday that approximately $250,000 was raised over the past year through bazaars, raffles, rum- mage sales, auctions and a mail-out appeal for support from businesses and parish members. The socicty’s original goal was to raise $200,000 for the restoration project. “It’s amazing we were able to accomplish this in a year. People are very proud of this building. A lot of families: are connected to this build- ing,” said Alexander.
