For the well-heeled families who will descend upon the ballroom of the Hotel Vancouver Sunday, it is the chance te celebrate the holiday season together, with the swish of taffera and the clink of champagne glasses putting revelers in a festive mood For Family Services of the North Shore, it is the annual event that will generate more than $100,000 for counselling and support: pro- grams that are used by one in 14 families on the North Shore. The entire cost of the ball 1s underwritten by sponsors so that all of the proceeds from the sale of event and raffle uckets xo ro Family Services programs. Those programs address issucs dike family violence, sexaad abuse, adalescene dating: vier fence and family separation, Programs are preventive in nature, said Suc Bauman, the agency's director of community programs. Theyre geared towards giving peo- y Services ple the tools to prevent violence and: resolve conflict rather than deal with violence after ine fact. Bauman is especially proud of 2 program called “Breaking Patterns: helping teens create anew generation of healthy relationships,” which receives funding from the Vancouver Foundation and the Ministry of Women’s Equality. The classroom-based program is offered to every Grade 10) student on the North Shore, Separate one-hour sessions are held on dating violence, healthy relationships, family violence and sexual abuse. Each session is run by two youth workers. But the Family Services involvement doesn’t stop there.
