speed limit, as the case may
be), Fifty klicks seems very
fast in the confined spaces of
the downtown core, yet the
better drivers both prefer it
and can handle it, The bewil-
. dered? Not so much,

If'a driver decides to travel
at less than the speed limit lie
~ or she will miss every single
“, synchronized light. .

_ Subsequently, every driver
‘behind the slow poke will
miss the light also. Ifa driver
travels too fast for the system,
as some are wont to do when
lights appear green for a long
stretch, they might very well
fall out of synch as they catch
up to a previous light cycle
. Which is just finishing and
turning red.
As for the North Shore, I
_ queried the city’s traffic tech-
” nologist extraordinaire Len —
, Mierau on the marter.
“To be coordinated or not

on your philosophy,” mused |

coordination is primarily one”

may make things worse, since
clocks have a tendency to
“crift” off their mark.

does work we may hear a lot

Len recalled his most
recent other-worldly adven-
ture with the Ministry of
Transportation and Highways.
“The signals at the Westview
Interchange, from 23rd Street
north to the Shopping
Centre, are in territorial clis-
pute.” You could almost hear
Len sigh in resignation. “The
signals are in a system with
which we do not have com-
munications. We are not able
to fine tune the system.”
Sadly, and strangely, the
MoTH has no intention of
allowing North Van to com-
municate and co-ordinate
with the System Master at
Westview under their present
policy. That would make
things too efficient, I suspect,
and would probably conflict
with some special agenda
designed to someday benefit
the free world (My, I should
write an X-Files episode).
The good news? Well,
