LAST WEEK the National Basketball Association (NBA) and
Northwest Sports Enterprises (NSE) unveiled the new name and logo
for Vancouver's NBA franchise, ending weeks (or months) of specu-
lation, Fhe Vancouver Grizzlies was selected from more than 1,000
names that had been submitted to the company after it was decided
that The Mounties would not do. A roaring, swatting grizziy bear,
with a basketball in its clutches and large teal letters overhead will
adorn breakfast cereal boxes later in August, The team will play its

first game in 1995 — assuming ticket sales Increase — when
‘foronto's Raptors enter the league as well, Grizzlies* general manag:
er Stu Jackson said the new name had to reflect the city’s cultural
and geographical nature as well as the (eam’s power, No doubt it also
had to be marketable when yeu consider merchandise sales, Last
year the league sold approximately $2.8 billion in merchandise, NBA
properties officials said they expect the Grizzlies’ logo (o be one of
the best-selling logos that exists, So what do local fans think?
