Graphic Dorothy Foster BUILT IN 1910, the Pacific Great Eastern No. 2 steam locomotive now resides at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park In Squamish. Accident mars its past THIS LITTLE engine that could, did. It became a survivor, and is the only exaniple from its era of Pacific Great Eastern Steam Engines. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorothy Foster This wain, which operated on the North Shore, is now a focal point at the entrance to the newly opened . West Coast Railway Heritage Park, - two kilometres north of Squamish. " 66 The collision at mile 6.5 was “quite a surprise.’ 99 _. The park is located just off Highway 99, alongside the BC Rail ‘tracks, and has on display more than 20 vintage rail cars and locomotives, plus others in various stages of restoration, as well as a substantial -collection of memorabilia. “ The No, 2, pictured above, was ‘built in 1910 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia for the Howe Sound, Pemberton Valley, and Northern Railway, which eventually became the Pacific Great Eastern (PGE). The sidetanker No. 2 served as a construction and work train, building the lines from Squamish to Lillooet. The engine was then sold in 1920 to the Comox Logging and Railway Co, (later Crown Zellerbach) where it worked in its lumber operations. The *“Two-Spoi.” as it was affec- tionately known, was retumed to the PGE until its acquisition by the West Coast Railway Association in 1965. An interesting anecdote from No. 2’s history came during the Labor Day weekend in 1916 when it was involved in a head-on collision with PGE Motor Car No. 103 at West Bay (West Vancouver). All trains on the North Shore line ran at half-hour intervals due to the holiday crowds going to festivities at Whytecliff which included band con- certs, races, and picnics. The No. 2 left North Vancouver sometime during the afterncon with three cars full of passengers, while the No. 103 departed Whytecliff at the same time with a single coach containing a few siders. The two trains were supposed to meet at Dundarave; however, when the No. 2 arrived first, it stopped briefly and then continued north- ward, its engineer obviously had for- gotten about the arranged meeting. Needless to say, the collisicn at mile 6.5 was “quite a surprise.” The No. 2 smokebox (the engine was backwards pulling its cars) rammed into the No. 103°s moter compartment with such force that the No. 103 was damaged beyond repair. The No. 2 was re-built at North Vancouver shops and, amazingly enough, it has survived to today. * Friday, duly 29! 1994 - North Shore News = 17 | Get best value possible GET THE most from your dry clean- ing dollar by following these tips: @ Have your garments cleaned when soiled.
