Nature : . deal wit! Dear Editor: : Kate Zimmerman’s Feb. 25 arti- cle “Living. and Dying in North Vancouver's Lions Gate Hospital (LGH),” gave me great confidence and a feeling of great gratitude. Lam heartened to know that I live in & community where our hos- - pital holds the preservation of life in such esteem when it seems fash- ionable not to do so, Congratulations to Dr. Werner Boldt and his staff of palliative care at LGH, He is really living his hippocrat- ic outh to maintain life as long as is naturally possible. ’ My father died in this'ward after along and courageous illnezs. His pain was controlled in a kind und sympathetic manner and my children and 1 would not give away those last few days when my father verbalized his’ deepest fecl- ings and thoughts about our family and his attitude towards life and our community. I know from the way he fought to live that he would not have had it any other way, He lived and died, and give an exaniple of patient faith and wis- dom to us all. Our children have to learn that we can't “kiss everything and make it better.” Dying is a normal sequence to life and should occur naturally, not by physician-assisted suicide. in Holland where physician- assisted suicide isibeen luw, they are now trying to bring in involun- lary-assisted suicide, This means that;we no longer have any say — our lives and deaths are controfled’ by physicians who make this decision. Do we want that here? Pat Battensby i North Vancouver It’s time to bust loose with some Canadian patriotism Dear Editor: | ‘Lam sure that most of your read- ets have been exceptionally thrilled by the fine performances of Canadian.-athletes at the 1994 Olympic Games at Litehammer. Regarding this, there was one thing that was particularly enlight- “ening. © -.. Tam referring to the: great enjoy- ment and enthusiasm our athletes “showed each time they were on the podium’ and in subsequent’ inter- views having performed well for -* Canada. ‘This outward display of puatrio- tism was indeed good to see-and it forced me to wonder why, if our top athletes can be so proud to per- form so well for Canada, is patrio- tism in this country not promoted more in our schools and amongst our immigrants? ; _If this is such a great country, then we should be proud of it and not keep patriotism under wraps. In oar national anthem are the words, “We stand on guard for thee.” | wonder how many would, | John S. BOE ant RNAP TESTE ESTE Doug’s film view backed Dear Editor: {ts not surprising that columnist Doug Collins has raised the hackles of the Jewish community with his strong critique of the film Schindler's List, and his char- acterization of that film as pro- paganda rather thaa the nan- fictional documentary the entertainment and news media would have us believe it is. However, surely Adum Rabiner, in criticizing Collins (North Shore News Mailbox, March 30), caunot expect to be taken seriously when he accuses Collins of slandering what Rabiner calls the “so- called Jewish influences’ in Hollywood and the media.” Since Rabiner’s stalement appears to deny the existence of such influence, he should acquaint himself with former PBS film critic Neal Gabler’s book: An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood to Begin With, Then Rabiner would do well to recognize that Jewish | ownership of major American media outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, the television networks, and publishing houses is perva-' sive. The fact is, the North American Jewish community does wield substantial influ- ‘ence in the entertainment and . news media, and with that power comes a responsibility to present even-handed accounts of world historical events, which ate not always _dudeocentric in scope.
