Waterfront casino won’t
stop gaming trips to Reno

ALL THE howling and
breast-beating over the pro-
posed waterfront casino is ¢
joke. Even more of a joke is
Premier Harcourt's grim-
faced warning of strict pov-
ernment control.

For most people, gambling is
supposed to be fun. By the time
these lulus get through with it, duit
casino will be a horror story.

First, let me list my qualifica-
tions to make these statements. |

— 21, craps and all the new poker
variations (love 'em!).

Nevada gambling is fun. I prefer
Reno to Las Vegas as I’m serious

erating. In Vegas, that can mean a
long waik.

Atlantic City had just opened for
-business when | visited. I was in
‘New York Ciiy and the hote! had a
shuttle service (the bus was $10,
then they handed you $10 in quar-
ters when you arrived). It seemed
like a good deal so off I went.

It was awful!

There were maybe three good-
sized casinos operating to full

like? Atlantic City lineups would be
short by comparison.

Now, let's look at government
control.

In the case of our government,
that has to mean obvious control.
They'll stop short of jackboots and
billy clubs but they "I make it so

you'll wish you'd stayed home,

In many overseas clubs, you
can’t change money at the tables.
Instead, you must go to a booth,
conveniently located in the north-
easi commer, behind the restaurant.

But wait! That's the booth for,
changing chips — to get money you
go to the southwest comer behind
the washrooms. '

No personal cheques. No credit
cards. No big bills. Six pieces of —
photo ID and your banker's signa-

- ture. Our government will probably

push to charge GST on the transac-
tion.

Meanwhile, you've lost your
seat and get to stand in line again.

This casino is fated to take all
the fun out of a little spree. Instead,
it will attract tourists and people
with severe gambling probiems.

These are difficult companions
— the tourists clutter up the place
and the others can get downright
hasty. .

If British Columbia is going to
get in the game then why not make
