WV qualities ‘rapidly eroding’ AN OPEN LETTER TO ‘THE WEST VANCOUVER MAYOR AND DISTRICT COUNCIL: Our family chose to move to West. Vancouver several years ago because of the ample trees, coun- try lanes, lack of traffic, quiet pace and community atmosphere. It has been most disturbing to’ see all these qualities being rapidly eroded by the loss of lovely old homes, clear-cut lots featuring mega-houses, widened and curbed streets to accommodate bumper- to-bumper traffic, highrises on the waterfront, night ferry traffic Need deeper understanding f the famil of the lamily Dear Editor: David Schreck’s defense of the Infant's Act (North Shore News, Jan. 1) leaves me with some unanswered questions. When was the old Act brought in, and why? Was it to deal with runaway children who needed medical attention in a hurry,! and couldn’t or wouldn't contact their parents? In the normal course of events, who knows when a child is com- petent ‘to give informed consent better than the parents? A ‘‘ser- vice provider” who sces the child a few times in a stressful situa- tion? Informed consent, 1 believe, is _ fot required in our government- funded abortion clinics — possibly not even allowed. Will this change under the new Act? ; ‘lis it true that the new Act for- “bids the “service providers’’ to in- form the parents of any pro- ceduses that have been suggested to, and accepted by, their child? Who is responsible for later care of the child, if the service . chosen by the child has tong- term ‘ ‘complications? 1 hepe some of our government representatives have a deeper un- ‘derstanding of ‘‘family,’’ and will bring some common sense to this problem. / F.Stannus North Vancouver Mailbox policy LETTERS TO the editor must be ANegible (preferably. typewritten) ‘-and include your name, full ad- dress and telephone number. ‘Due to space constraints the North Shore News cannot publish all Jetters.: Published ietters may be edited for brevity, clarity, ac- curacy, legality and taste. and now a “bigger and better’* Park Royal, which will surely have a negative impact our local community shopping areas, Can we really afford to sacrifice more trees for yet another golf driving range? I believe I’m not the only West Vancouver resident who is mourn- ing the loss of that lovely wooded area west of Park Royal. It’s dif- ficult to understand who, besides the developers, is benefiting from all this; certainly not our longtime residents, .young families —- or, for that matter, anyone J've talk- ed to. And certainly not North Shore golfers who already have two driving ranges to serve them — double what they hud two years ago. It's a sad affair when elected tepresentatives seem so easily seduced by development corpora- tions. {"'m sure you would agree that decisions affecting the character, dynamics, safety and ecology of our community should be made in partnership with those who live, work and shop here.
