Mine? I tested our local medical facilities. Let me report to all residents. My holiday plans were changed when an ultra scan, ordered for another purpose, revealed a large _ malignant tumor quietly enjoying itself on my right kidney. Three weeks later, kidney and tumor were removed. 1 marvel at the speed . and courtesy with which I was treated, for 1 am the modern unknown cit- izen -— senior, female, living quietly in a smali apartment. Had ! been the dowager of a prestigious or wealthy family, 1 could not have been treated with greater consideration. Specialists booked full time, squeezed me into their daily routines. Three days after a cat scan,a bed and operating space were found for -me. Post- operative care was excellent. My throat decided to go into painful spasms whenever I swallowed. Dehydrating, I was sent by my family doctor to the emergency department to be seen by a throat specialist. Again, doctors eased me into their full schedules: 1 was re- admitted for intravenous feeding. — After appropriate care, I returned home, impressed both by the hard-working nurses and busy doctors. In my 16 days in hospita! | had time to observe and think. | wondered if the doctors’ salaries were capped and if they limited the number of patients they would see, who would they eliminate? The unexpected patient with cancer within? The dehydrating person? You with the broken leg? There are others waiting weeks for appointments. Which of us would be denied access to care? I want to deplore the way our elected reps in Victoria are treating cur doctors. I hope they realize they, too, may need them. I hope they realize their high- handed tactics could send the best and brightest of our health pro- fessionals elsewhere. We shall all be the losers. 1, not by choice, tested the local medical facilities. They were ex- cellent. 1 urge everyone to let his MLA know we want our hard-working doctors treated with the same respect and care they give us. What would | have done without them? What will you? I want to thank Lions Gate Hospital and staff for the good work done in this community. Marguerite Carriere North Vancouver Cost of ferries reasonable Dear Editor: For those who might be in- clined to criticize the cost of B.C. Ferries, the following might be of interest. This summer my wife and | visited Europe and decided to take our rental car to France on the Newhaven-Dieppe route. We inadvisedly decided to go on a Saturday. This crossing takes four hours. Total cost, one-way, was 146 pounds ster- ling, which at the rate of ex- change at that time worked out fo just over $300! When I complained about the high cost 1 was told not to travel on a weekend. On our return we came back on a Thursday, ciianging the route to Cher- bourgh-Southampton, a 6% hour crossing. Fare this time: 85 pounds sterling — at the exchange rate of $200. Combined, our 10% hours of crossings cost us $500. Question: How many times can you go’ back and forth from the mainland to Van- couver Island for that kind of expense? | Perhaps we should not com- plain about our fares. C.D.
