16 — Friday, June 12, 1992 - North Shore News Landscaping guide perfect for the do-it-yourselfer Northwest Landscaping — A practical guide to creating the garden you have always wanted, By Michael Munro, Pubi. by Alaska Northwest Books, 1992, 192 pp., $21.95 soft cover OVER THE years I have been collecting books on garden- ing for my library. Many recent publications make great coffee table editions or in- teresting books to glance through but lack the detail most amateur gardeners are looking for without getting overwhelmed by Latin names. Books published in California or eastern North America describe garden practices and plant material that are not applicable to our northwest coast climate. It was therefore with pleasure that I had the chance to review Northwest Landscaping, a beok written for the western homeown- er who wants to be a do-it- yourself landscaper. The book is thoughtfully laid out in a sequential way with each chapter devoted co a particular task. If the material presented is insufficient for the reader’s inter- est, the author gives a series of references for further reading. The writing style is simple and flows easily. There is technical language used to help the reader understand the landscaping trade, but the terms are always used in an explanatory way to help the beginner. In the section on planning and construction there are many prac- tical suggestions with lists of op- By Roy Jonsson Contributing Writer tions for different locations and styles of gardens. This section, along with others, is well il- lustrated with black and white photographs and_three-dimen- sional diagrams. One helpful suggestion is a list of safety tips for the homeowner who may not appreciate the prob- lems related to landscape con- struction. Unlike many authors, Michael Munro is very specific about plant names and varieties when setting out options for garden plans. He always uses both the common and Latin names for the plants and provides an excellent plant list, grouped by category, at the end of the book. The index also lists both common and Latin names. Eight pages of high-quality color prints in the centre of the book add some interest to the black and white format but would be more effective if the captions were not keyed on the following page. Northwest Landscaping would be a very useful book for the beginning gardener or the do-it- yourself homeowner, a welcome addition to anyone's book collec- tion, -— By Roy Jonsson, a horticultur- al consultant who lives in North Vancouver.
