Grief recovery group offers support program THE NORTH Shore Grief Recov- ery Group is offering a six-week program Tuesday evenings at Highland United Church, North Vancouver, starting Oct. 1. The program gives information and support to help the bereaved through the grieving process. Following the death of someone close, grief is normal and natural, but we can ease the burden a little by learning about what to expect and by sharing coping strategies. The group leader will be Elizabeth Mendgen, who has special training in facilitating grief recovery, as does her assistant, Delores Caswell. Pre-registration is necessary and those interested should call 980- 6071. Ongoing support is available when the program ends. Grief is complex and uniquely experienced, but there are com- monalities that it helps to know are shared. As one participant expressed it, “The biggest thing I found is that you’re not aione ... there’s so much energy in the group and you realize that there is light at the end of the tunael.””—- The North Shore Grief Recov- ery Group was formed because a need for greater support for the bereaved was identified. The Hospice Program Unit of the Anglican Church initiated the training and programs, and sever- al North Shore churches, organizations, and individuals pit- ched in with time, effort, and money to ensure a successful im- plementation. Last year programs were pres- ented in fall, winter and spring, and the same is planned for this year (October, February, and May). Twice-monthly optional support groups are offered to give addi- tional encouragement after com- sletion of the six-week program. No religious affiliation is required, as the program is non-denomina- tional.
