SPORTS BRIEF\ Badminton players qualify for team NANCY REID and Allison Rice of the Hollybura Couatry Club have qualified to represent B.C. on its under-20 badminton tearm. Reid, 14, and Rice, 15, are the youngest players selected to the six-member team which will compete in the Clarkson Cup Championships, an inter-provincial team event to be held in Edmonton over the Thanksgiving weekend next month. In the qualifying playoffs, Rice was tied for first piace in the girls singles event and partnered with Reid to win the doubles event. Reid was the finalist in the mixed doubles event along with Chris Trenholme of Victoria. The pair upset the No. 2 and 3 teams enroute to the finals. -Hollyburn head pro, Zip Dhanani was selected to coach the team. After naming the team, Dhanani said that the players will be playing in the championships for the first time, and will also be defending champions for B.C, Other members of the team are Morgan and Skyler Van Heukleom, and Dhana Khan from Vancouver. Shore vaulters excel at meet SIX NORTH Shore residents shone at the Canadian team vaulting competition at the CVI Cloverdale (Con- cours Voltige Internationale) held recently at the Clover- dale Exhibition Grounds Agriplex. Putting in a strong showing for equestrian vaulting, 2 celatively new sport to Canada, was the Tamgrack ‘*A™’ team which placed first in its division of Canadian team competition. The team is made up of Kahlyn Daniels, 18, Kathleen Arnott, 11, Kea Bawtinheimer, 11, and Katie Metzner, 3. Also winning their division was the Tamarack °‘B’’ team made up of Christine Schmoll, 18, and Stephanie Guidobona, 9. . Pre-race package pick-up will take place at the North Shore Winter Club on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 68:30 p.m. Walkathon raises funds for schizophrenia research NORTH SHORE residents will join people from Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia in a walk-a-thon Sept. 29 to caise money for medical research for schizophrenia. ‘Schizophrenia is considered youth’s greatest disabler because it typically hits between 17 and 29 years of age,’’ said Sylvia Tremblay, executive director of B.C. Friends of Schizophrenics. Participants in the North Shore’s two-kilometre walk will leave John Lawson Park at | p.m. and travel west on the seawall to Dundarave Pier and back. After the walk, refreshments will be available at John Lawson Park. Tremblay said one in 100 Brit- ish Columbians or 30,000 people in the province have schizophrenia. She said there is no cure for the organic brain disorder but drug therapy is successfully used in controlling the symptoms of 30'7 of schizophrenics. The first Walk the World for Schizophrenia was held in the United Kingdom in 1988. This is the first time the annual walk has been held in B.C.
