The Adopt-a-Trail program has been running for several years in co- operation with the B.C. Ministry of Parks, the Ministry of Forests and many municipalities. The program encourages volunteer groups to take on the maintenance and care of a hiking trail or past of a trail in communities throughout the province. Such programs are very popular in the United States and quickly catching on in B.C. “Adopting a trail gives a group the cpportunity to enjoy the outdoors together through meaningful exercise, learning new skills and par- licipating in keeping the outdoors and wilderness in British Columbia a great and safe place to visit,” says the federation. “There are many popular trails, and little government money for their maintenance. We congratulate those many enthusiastic volunteer groups who have already adapted or are maintaining a trail, but we need many more participants.” Church groups, schools, Legion branches, service clubs and groups of friends are among those people who have already adopted trails. For more information, contact the Federation of Mountain Clubs at 737-3053. Hydro’s Power Smart program is marking the most efficient fridges with a pink $65 sticker; standard Power Smart fridges will be marked with a yellow sticker and are eligible for a $40 rebate. Power Smart is aiming to attract more customers to the most efficient models and discourage them from buying inefficient ones that don’t qualify for a Power Smart rating. Since Power Smart was introduced into B.C. two years ago, the number of Power Smart models for sale has climbed from just a few to over 250. Up to 1,000 composters are be- ing sold, delivered and installed to North Shore residents, who have their pick of five different com- poster styles, While Hayter is pleased by the response, she does have one re- quest of callers to the 98-GREEN (984-7336) compost phone line: if you are connected with the Going Green answering machine, please leave your name, address and phone number in as clear a voice as possible. She is hoping that Pam McDonald of Deep Cove will call again, because unfortunately Hayter couldn't make out her phone number. The highschool students who will be visiting customers to help them choose a composter have received the names of the first 125 callers, and should be contacting them this week. To reserve a composter, call 98-GREEN while supplies last. eid ; “When you think about los- ing weight, you think about food. Funny, isn't it?
