Sculptures on display elicit emotional responses

a reilection of the interest of many
recent women artists in textiles,
fabrics, and related materials.

Bentley's English Bay Garden is
a large atmospheric piece made
entirely from strands of felt that are
first separated into uniformly col-
ored layers that are then tightly
compressed.

The resulting multicolored
sandwich is subsequently cut into
strips that are threaded together to
form a soft, iridescent landscape.
The vertical movement of the
strips and shimmering pinks, pur-
ples, blues, mauves, and violets
create the impression of an en-
chanting moonlit garden, seen
from behind a waterfall.

In contrast, Gail Ridgeway uses
a combination of natural materials,
clay, hand-made paper, straw, and
wood, to suggest | the landscape of
her desert.

Charlotte Diamond
childrens’ performer comes to
the North Shore.

Kids’ entertainer
to perform focally

HEY KIDS — Charlotte Diamond
and her Hug Bug Band are coming
to the North Shore this Sunday.

The popuiar children’s enter-
tainer will perform two shows, at 2
and 4:30 p.m.

Diamiond will sing songs from
her newly-released recording, The
Christmas Gift. Locally-produced,
the recording features songs frorn
Africa, Peru, Spain, France, Ger-
many and England. Performing
with Diamond are the ug Bug
Band, the Vancouver Chamber
Choir, Brassmith, and members of
the Peruvian band, Grupo Ayllu.

Her Anasazi Suraces / and ft,
painted in browns, rust, andochre,
are predominantly abstract images
which conjure up the ghostly
sandstone formations of the
Arizona hinterland and the skeletal
structure of the ancient Anasazi
cliff dwellings.

The considerable strength of
these works lies in their capacity
to stimulate the recollection of
texture: We can feel the gritty sur-
face and dense volume of the
rocks, as well as the husky,
rough-hewn architecture of the
homebred habitat.

Denial is the title of a pro-
vocative and ironic piece by
Capilano College instructor, Lesley
Richmond.

abaca paper, dyed silk, nails,
thread, carpet mesh, and wire, it
possesses the three-dimensional
features of a relief, and pictures a
sacrificial altar, the centrepiece of
which is a computer circuit.

This dark and sombre temple is
surrounded by a threatening and
encroaching mass of what the ar-
tist calls ‘organic remains.”’

Here is a work that could serve
as a wonderfully evocative ma-
quette for a voluptuously blood-
thirsty stage production spoofing
the contemporary Frankenstein
who worships electronic informa-
tion.

There are a number of other fine
pieces in the show, in particular,
the Empress with Scenes from Her
Life by Eleanor Hannan, and three

items from a series on the seven
virtues by Nicole Dextras.

Hannan has sown together stiff
bits of paper (some with cryptic
images painted on them) into a
patchwork arrangement around a
masked, dancing, female figure.
She transforms the pattern of the
quilt into a metaphor of
motherhood, which, we learn
from the notes on the piece,
means “‘provider, lover, teacher,
protector, and socializer.”’

f Hannan idealizes an image of
women, Dextras parodies it.

In Venice/Love, for instance, she
brings together a variety of icons
associated with the affairs of the
heart: a rose, a crescent moon,
gondolas, swans, and the facade of
a Venice waterway at the centre of

which is a Botticelli Venus pranc-
ing on a seashell.

Dextras satirizes romanticised
womanhood and debunks the
myth of romantic love. The artist
achieves her effect by means of a
somewhat complicated process of
applying brightly colored dyes to
handmade cotton paper, which
has the texture of a lumpy card-
board egg-carton!

This exhibition is, first and
foremost, a delight for the eye and
a stimulant to the tactile imagina-
tion.

The works range, however, from
the eminently sensual to the intel-
lectually provocative, from the
purely whimsical to the richly
ironic. A smali but concentrated
show, it packs a delectable punch.
