Bridal registry solves guesswork

TO MANY, the term Bridal Regis-
try is either completely unknown
or grossly misunderstood.

But, used properly, a Bridal
Registry is an extremely useful tool
for all parties.

Anyone who has ever received
an invitation to a wedding im-
mediately begins to think of a gift
for the bride and groom. This is a
tradition that dates back thousands
of years. Usually, the couple to be
married are young and about to

probably haven’t been working too
long and have not had time to ac-
cumulate savings and household
effects.

The idea of a wedding gift is to
give them useful things with which
to build a home. The problem is,
what do they need and want?

The answer then is the Bridal
Registry. Simply put, the bride and
groom ‘‘make the rounds’’ of
various retail stores and select their
choice of china, crystal and
cutlery.

The store chosen should show
some personal attention and ser-
vice in this selection. After all, the
patterns selected wil) be used for
many years to come. For instance,
is it important that the china be
dishwasher safe or microwave us-
able?

If the couple requests silverware,
are they aware of the attention it
requires? It has been a tradition
that the good silver always came
out when guests came for dinner.
However, a lot of things have
changed over the years.

Thirty years ago it was rare for a
house to have a dishwasher. Now,
it is rare for 2 home not to have
one. Good silverware CANNOT
go in a dishwasher and must be
washed by hand. Good silver will
also tarnish and must be cleaned
regularly.

The alternative, then, is a good
quality stainless steel that can go ia
the dishwasher and does not re-
quire any special care.

The choice china must be

carefully thought out also. Some-
limes two selections should be
made, one for everyday use and
one for entertaining. How many
place settings are needed and what
size and number of serving bowls
and platters are required?

The store dealt with should be
able to give some advice in this
regard (hint: two pairs of salt and
Pepper are useful. Ever had to wait
for someone to pass them?)

The choice of crystal is impor-
tant too, since not only should the
size and shape be considered but
the price. If a glass gets broken can
the newlyweds afford to replace it?

All selections should be noted on
a form at the store which will show
the name of each pattern selected
and the quantities required. As the
guests pick up the gifts, the selec-
tions should also be recorded by
the store to avoid duplication.

When sending our gift, I would
like to address my feelings. Is this
proper? I could say: ‘‘Sorry we
couldn’t be there to celebrate your
special day. I have deducted the $7
charge accordingly.’’

For family members who are
also offended but still plan to at-
tend, should they also deduct the
charge and hand it to the couple
when dancing? After the first
dance?

much they have perverted the no-
ble impulse of hospitality — and
the special generosity that is sup-
posed to motivate people to have

were to allow you to chastise a
bridal couple, people this far gone
would hardly understand enough
to take insult.

That is not to say that you
should be participating in this
debacle. Declining the invitation is

one way out; in this case, you need
not send them a present at all. If
other offended relatives were to at-
tend the ceremony and reception
but decline the paid event after-
ward, the point would be suffi-
ciently made.
