‘Roses’ to women who make own decisions

Dear Editor:
In response to Manners wrong
with breast-feeding advice, the
Dec. 6 fetter by Renee Hefti. 1
agree with her comments on the
legitimacy of breast-feeding in
public; it is perfectly acceptable.

We are bombarded with
women’s breasts in the media — to
sell everything and anything, as
well as for entertainment purposes.
But, an exposed breast to feed an
infant is looked on as obscene or
distasteful by some. Something is
wrong here.

However, I disagree with Ms.
Hefti on another matter. I believe
she herself has an ‘‘attitude prob-
lem’’ in making assumptions and
declaring to women that breast-
feeding is and should be the ‘‘op-
timum means of providing nutri-
tion’’ and that women who do this
are ‘‘doing what is natural and
best.”’

This is a loaded judgment on
women who choose not to breast-
feed, for whatever reasons — per-
sonal choice, physical inability or
incompatibility with a professional
working situation. Women must
acknowledge each other’s choices
